Communique: Conclusion of a Civil Society Workshop
Civil society organizations from 19 African countries met in Banjul, the Gambia, 26-28 June 2006, in advance of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government, to discuss African civil society organizations' skills and capacity to monitor compliance with commitments made under African Union treaties, with particular reference to the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). The workshop, entitled "Strengthening Civil Society Monitoring and Evaluation of Compliance with African and International Standards", brought together around 50 participants from 19 African countries, of which CRDA was one representing the CSOs in Ethiopia. The workshop's aim was to assess the Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and civil society participation, African governments' compliance with African standards and political participation through the lens of discrimination and access to citizenship.
2006 Humanitarian Appeal
The Government and humanitarian partners appealed for 2.6 million food aid beneficiaries of which 69 percent are in the critically-affected pastoralist and agro-pastoralist areas. For the first time in decades there are no emergency food beneficiaries in Tigray and Harari Regions this year. These and other chronically food insecure populations are covered under the PSNP. Non-food needs for the country remain high, particularly in drought prone parts of the country.
